The History, Meaning and Background To The Practice
Records of Kundalini Yoga date back to around 6000BC in the Upanishads. Early teachings of yoga was attributed to the deity Shiva, who instructed his consort Parvarti in the art. In its earliest forms Yoga utilised elements of posture work (asana), breath work (pranayama), meditation, Sound vibration (mantra) and relaxation. As time progressed, different personal preferences led to the formation of yogas concentrating for example on the physical element, to become hatha yoga, or the sound element to form mantra yoga. Kundalini yoga is a dynamic and spiritually potent form of yoga, using a combination of mantra (sound vibration), asana (posture), breath control (pranayama), meditation and relaxation to promote a strong, flexible and radiant body mind and spirit.
The practice also brings you to a place of stillness to experience the inner stillness of your true identity. Until recently Kundalini Yoga was a well-guarded secret, passed down by Masters to students within certain castes, having proven themselves worthy of the technology. In the 60s Yogi Bhajan saw the need in the Western world of a powerful tool to raise consciousness. In 1969 he broke the code of silence when he came to the West and began openly teaching Kundalini Yoga.
